The Good Oil

In 2025, Pure Oil New Zealand Limited secured two Outstanding Food Producer Awards Gold Medals for their products. The Good Oil, Extra Virgin High Oleic Sunflower Oil was praised by judges for its taste with hints of corn and broccoli with a nutty finish. The Good Oil, Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil, impressed judges with its mouth-coating texture and nutty flavour.

The Good Oil also captured the attention of OFPA sustainability judges Emily King and Fiona Stephenson who acknowledged the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovative practice. Since its first trial run in 2014, The Good Oil has grown to operate a large commercial oilseed crush plant in Rolleston, Canterbury;  supplying high quality, New Zealand grown and cold pressed bulk rapeseed and sunflower oils.

Land health is the heart of the company's sustainable farming practice to ensure the long-term viability of their crops. GE-free high oleic rapeseed and sunflower varieties are grown by more than 100 farms across Aotearoa, increasing diversity, improving soil health, reducing fertiliser use,and breaking pest cycles. Additionally, soybeans are being introduced as a nitrogen-fixing, sustainable crop, to further enhance soil health. In collaboration with the Foundation for Arable Research, Pure Oil New Zealand Limited runs monitor farms to trial sustainable farming practices, improving yields and ensuring long-term viability.

Production processes is also a key element of their strategy. Oils are cold-pressed, using no chemicals or solvents, retaining nutritional value and consuming less energy. The Good Oil operates a zero-waste model, converting byproducts like meal into nutritious, chemical-free animal feed and recycling used cooking oil from customers into biofuel or bio-industrial alternatives, replacing petroleum-based products. Where viable, they use NZ-made packaging, including recycled glass bottles, cartons, and reusable bulk packaging.

Pure Oil New Zealand Limited's products are valued for their traceability, freshness, and quality, displacing 8 million litres of imported oils and 12 million kg of imported meal annually. Their impact extends beyond their products.

The fundraising program has helped more than 150 schools, clubs and sports teams across New Zealand raise funds by selling their 1-litre products, with fundraisers raising over $1000 on average. For three years, they have supported Breast Cancer Foundation NZ through their annual Pink Ribbon campaign, donating $1 from every bottle sold to fund research, education, and support. They also sponsor local clubs, events and causes, including young equestrian riders like Paige Fitzgerald and Steffi Whittaker and support equestrian events around New Zealand.
