Sustainability Hero

Baron Hasselhoff’s

Baron Hasselhoff’s might be a small team in Wellington, but their commitment to the planet and its people is nothing short of legendary.

Their approach to sustainability begins with soil health, ensuring their cacao is grown organically and wild, free from pesticides. By partnering with Pacific growers and cacao ambassadors who share their environmental values, they ensure every bean is fully traceable and supports a supply chain that resists deforestation. From farmer-led co-ops in Papua New Guinea to fair-trade sugar from Paraguay, the Baron ensures that those at the origin are paid a premium, supporting the long-term prosperity of their communities.

Closer to home, the Baron Hasselhoff whanau operates with a low-waste, high-standard mindset. In their workshop, almost everything is done by hand to keep their energy footprint small. Energy comes from Toast Electric—a not-for-profit provider that supports locals in energy hardship. Their kitchen waste is composted on-site, while cacao husks are repurposed as mulch for local orchards. Baron Hasselhoff’s packaging is plastic-free, utilising plant-based cellophane and FSC-certified tape that you can safely toss into your home compost bin once the treats are gone.

The Baron also believes in a "second chance" for chocolate, ensuring no scrap goes to waste. Perfectly imperfect sweets find a home in their "Cost of Living" basket at half price, while regular donations of Charity Balls go to Wellington’s Kaibosh Food Rescue.

As the business works toward formal B-Corp accreditation, they continue to offset their carbon footprint through Trees That Count.

By paying a Living Wage to their staff and supporting local initiatives like Women’s Refuge, Baron Hasselhoff’s proves that delicious, medal-winning craft chocolate can be a powerful force for good, from the Pacific islands to the streets of Wellington.
